What Makes a Poem
What Makes a Poem

Rime doth not a poem make,

nor do metrics; i.e. poetic rhythm.

Metaphors are a must but must be sharp not dull, snapping our wavering attention to attention

more poetic than crass commercial pitches,

more beguiling than a bowl of spinach,

the element of novelty must far exceed "moon and June,"

animated and pulsate but in temperate moderation,

erudite, but not in a preening, ego-stroking way.

The head has to be in it but the heart headmost within it.

Very commanding and demanding all this, and you may discover that I made use of it somewhat in several strophes of my poem "Lift us up to thee."

(Big words: stigma, resonate, tantalizing, microcosm, omnipotence)
